Hurray! The 18th of June is Father’s day and this means we all should put our dads in the spotlight. It used to be enough to just draw a picture at school, make an ashtray out of clay (even if your father doesn’t smoke) or cut some paper flowers.
But when your all grown up, it’s time to really think about what your father would like to do on this special day. After all the money he spent on you, it is time to return the favor and create a father’s day like never before.
If you are celebrating father’s day in Holland, here are some tips at least our fathers would love to do on father’s day. Get inspired and make your daddy happy!
Ice Bar Amsterdam
Even though your father is an adult, he might even get a little old, it does not mean he would be happy as a child holding a glass made out of ice full of Extra Cold Heineken beer. At the Xtra Cold Ice bar in Amsterdam you will be welcomed will a drink, and while you watch an introduction video about the Nova Zembla: a Dutch expedition to Siberia, you can enjoy your drink and mentally prepare yourself for the freezing experience. This is someting your father would never do otherwise, and will surely give him a great laugh.
Jenever, Stroopwafels or Cheese: Dutch Delights!
Everyone is different, but for all the dads we have great, yummie delights in Holland! Does your dad like sweet stuff? Go for Dutch stroopwafels! The best ones are to be bought at the Albert Cuyp Market in Amsterdam, you can smell the delicious waffles from miles away! Is your father a cheese guy? In this case don’t hesitate to visit one of the many excellent cheese stores in Holland and get him a nice package! Jenever is Dutch gin and not for everyone, but many Dutch dads can’t be happier than with a fresh pint of Heineken and a Jenever on the side (here we call this a ‘Kopstoot’).
Harbour tour in Rotterdam
Your father probably worked very hard his entire life to provide for his family. The real worker life experience is also found in one of the largest harbours in the world: the harbour of industrial Rotterdam. A canal cruise through the harbour of Rotterdam will show everything what’s going on in the harbour and an audioguide tells the story of this harbour. Just have a seat in the large and comfortable boat, have a drink and a snack and enjoy the cruise!
Kroller Muller Museum + National Park Hoge Veluwe
Whether your father likes nature or culture, this place has both. Go to the Hoge Veluwe, get a free bicycle and enjoy the beautiful nature of Holland in the park. If you would like to score extra points: don’t hesitate to bring a basket with lunch! At the private collection in the Kroller Muller museum you can admire famous works from all over the world.
Well, if all this does not work, you can always get him some Delfts Blue pottery, and secretly make your mom happy!
