A wonderful Collection of Mesdag and his Inspirators
This Attraction is closed until further notice.
From 1866 Mesdag and his wife Sientje gradually built an incredible collection of paintings of artists they loved. The focus of The Mesdag Collection is the French Barbizon School and The Hague School.
The Barbizon school includes artists such as Camille Corot, Charles-François Daubigny and Théodore Rousseau. Their aim was to depict landscape and peasant life in a personal, everyday manner. They preferred to work in the open air so as to capture their impressions immediately.
The artists of The Hague School, to which Mesdag belonged, followed in their footsteps, recording the mood that landscapes evoked in them, using subdued colours and loose brush strokes. The collection includes superb works by artists including Mesdag’s early friend Jozef Israëls and fellow artists Anton Mauve, Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch and the brothers Jacob, Willem and Matthijs Maris.
Mesdag’s interest was not confined to the Barbizon School and The Hague School: the collection also includes works by artists such as Marius Bauer, Gustave Courbet and Antonio Mancini.
