Discover the history of the bags
Yes, you heard correct, there is a museum entirely dedicated to the art of bags and purses! Hurray! The Museum of Bags and Purses has a collection of more than 5.000 bags, pouches, suitcases, purses and matching accessories, frequently praised internationally for its diversity and quality. It is situated in the heart of Amsterdam.
Not only the different models, materials and designs are on display but you can also follow the history of the accessory. Have a look at 500-year-old bags and suitcases and admire the purses of Madonna and Margaret Thatcher for instance.
Who thought of this great idea? Well, “Tassenmuseum Hendrikje” is founded by a lady named Hendrikje (a typical Dutch name). She developed a passion for vintage handbags and when her collection grew, she thought she should share it with the world!
In a magnificent 17th century canal house, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Canal Ring Area of Amsterdam, you will unlock the history of the bag from the Middle Ages to the present day. This is the only place you will find so many special and exciting bags under one roof. From unique historical items to timeless classics produced by world famous brands and up-and-coming designers.
Special exhibitions are always on in the Museum of Bags and Purses, linked to fashion icons we love. So if you are into fashion and culture, this is your perfect destination!
