The Hague: beach, shopping and culture! I did a week-end in The Hague, the Dutch city that hosts the Dutch parliament and royalty. The great thing about the city of The Hague is that it has a little of everything, so it’s fun for everyone! Here are some suggestions to spend your weekend: Morning We started the day cultural. The Hague has a lot to offer in terms of museums and historic architecture, but the absolute gem of the city is without a doubt the Mauritshuis. In the heart of the city, count Maurits built himself a house in the 17th century; the Mauritshuis. From 1822 it’s a museum with a great collection, thanks to Stewart William V, the father of the first Dutch king of the Netherlands. In the beautiful building you see the best art from Dutch and Flemisch masters, most importantly Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer and Peter-Paul Rubens. My personal favorite is ‘The Anatomic Lesson of Dr Tulip’ by Rembrandt… Afternoon Shopping! The Haagse Passage is the perfect place to go shopping, there are a lot of nice stores and there is a great mix between the bigger stores like H&M or Zara and smaller entrepeneurs with original themed stores. For lunch: Pastis is a really great spot! Good combination of modern and chique, yummy food and great service. We were just in time to also visit Escher in the Palace, a museum so high on my list, because I’m a big fan of Escher. Interactive and fun; informative and above all really impressing! Try and squeeze it in if you are a fan of Escher’s work as well. Evening It’s time to go to the beach!
